Creating Effective Prompts in ChatGPT: Tips for English Teachers

Продовжуючи тему про використання ШІ у викладанні англійської мови, розпочату в минулому пості, переходимо до ChatGPT.

Чат-бот з вбудованим штучним інтелектом має набагато більше можливостей ніж інші онлайн інструменти та технології, які ми використовували для підготовки матеріалів для занять.

Спеціалісти сфери IT пояснюють, що навчений розуміти людську мову - найкраще працює з англійською мовою - ChatGPT здатен розуміти контекст, проводити історичний аналіз, шукати інформацію, генерувати текстовий контент високої якості, надавати відповіді на запитання з різних галузей, перекладати та перевіряти тексти.

З такими можливостями ChatGPT може стати реальним помічником для викладачів англійської мови у створенні матеріалів для занять та підготовці цікавих занять.

З іншого боку, розуміючи людську мову занадто буквально або не маючи достатнього контексту для створення відповіді, чат-бот може розчарувати викладача.

Пам'ятаю, що коли я почала звертатися до ChatGPT з запитом створити вправу чи контекст для завдання, я теж часто отримувала зміст, який не відповідав таким реаліям навчання, як мовний рівень та вікова категорія моїх студентів, словник та стиль завдань. Це та інші неточності забирали багато часу і дратували, бо кожного разу треба було додавати нові деталі та розширювати контекст.

На нещодавному воркшопі з основ використання ChatGPT Лада Красовицька - ведуча воркшопу - поділилася своїм досвідом роботи з ШІ у створенні контенту. Вона пропонує навчити ШІ мові викладача і на питання про те, як будувати свою взаємодію з ChatGPT, вона надала 5 порад.

When prompting ChatGPT, it’s important to provide as many details as possible. There is a useful RACEF framework suggested by Anna Gandrabura, which has always worked for me, so I recommend you try it too.

The RACEF framework stands for Role, Action, Context, Example, and Format:

1. Role: Outline the role you would like ChatGPT to play.  

   Example: "You are an EFL teacher for university students specializing in Business with a focus on Marketing."

2. Action: Request specific actions.  

   Example: "Generate a lesson on the topic of Branding and Brand Management."

   Task 1: Provide a text of 150-180 words. Highlight 10 target vocabulary words or phrases related to the topic.

   Task 2: Generate concept-checking questions for each target vocabulary chunk.

   Task 3: Provide explanations of the target vocabulary and include an activity where students need to fill in the gaps to match the target vocabulary to the correct definition.

   Task 4: Generate 4 topic questions for students to discuss in open class.

3. Context: Include any relevant details that will help ChatGPT refine the output.  

   Example: "The material should be enough for a 45-minute class."

4. Example (Optional): If possible, provide an example of a similar activity you would like ChatGPT to model.

5. Format: Specify how you want the output to look.  

   Example: "Provide a complete lesson sheet with ready-to-use tasks." or “Provide the roadmap of the lesson.”

Simplifying helps ChatGPT focus on each part of the question.  

Example: "First, explain what a simile is. Then, give three examples of similes."

ChatGPT is not good at following negative instructions.  

Example: “Don't forget to explain the process step-by-step.”  

ChatGPT might ignore the "Don't" and produce a response that doesn't explain the process step-by-step.  

Instead, write: “Remember to explain the process step-by-step.”  

In this case, ChatGPT is more likely to follow this instruction and provide a detailed explanation of the process.

ChatGPT may struggle to accurately interpret and respond to CEFR levels. This can happen because:

• CEFR levels are specific and detailed, with each level encompassing a range of skills and competencies in language learning. The AI might not have the nuanced understanding required to differentiate and address these specific levels effectively.

• The AI may misinterpret the context or the specific needs associated with each level, leading to inaccurate or unhelpful responses.

• The training data for the AI might not include sufficient examples of tasks or content explicitly tied to CEFR levels, leading to gaps in its ability to provide accurate and relevant responses.

Instead of using CEFR levels, describe the students’ abilities and needs in plain language.

Original Prompt:  

"Create a lesson plan for B2.1 level English students focusing on improving their speaking skills."

Revised Prompt:  

"Create a lesson plan for intermediate English students who are comfortable with everyday conversations but need help with expressing opinions on more complex topics [topic]. The focus should be on improving their speaking skills."

Original Prompt:  

"Provide reading comprehension exercises suitable for C1 level students."

Revised Prompt:  

"Provide reading comprehension exercises for advanced English students who can understand detailed and complex texts and infer implicit meanings."[the text for reading]

ChatGPT will understand you anyway.

In conclusion, don't be shy about using ChatGPT in your teaching! With a bit of finesse and practice, you can let AI tools handle some of the heavy lifting like task checking and task generation, leaving you more time to engage with your students. And hey, why not encourage your students to use ChatGPT as a fun language practice buddy instead of banning it? It's a great tool, not an obstacle!
